Innovation

The project is innovative because students will be accessing a more practical and functional aspect of Mathematics by  creating mathematical games and puzzles, joining in tasks where they can understand the purpose of Maths and will be making their own mathematical problems for others to solve. There will be aspects of fundraising which will teach the pupils about profit, loss and totalling money as well as raising their social awareness of those less fortunate.. In some tasks they will be involved in creating and solving puzzles, rebuses and will be inspired to create their own games. This will let them exercise their mind and practise logical thinking. Through tasks and activities in this project both students and teachers will try to show the beauty and importance of the mathematical world which surrounds us at home, in school, on the playground, in the natural environment, technical environment, in music and art. The project is about exchanging materials about students themselves, their school, city and country. The materials will be presented in English which will also develop students’ language competencies. Interesting mathematical problems give an opportunity to teach through creativity and fun and encourage even low attainers and those students with special needs to search for solutions to mathematical problems. Seeing Mathematics in action rather than working from a textbook will improve their understanding and use of mathematical skills and will help them to learn to use them in everyday life. Disguising Mathematics through riddles, mini projects, games, writing raps and other interesting tasks should improve their attitude and motivation for the subject. This project would help them to realize how useful and rewarding group work can be and develop their confidence in sharing ideas and knowledge with others and overcoming difficulties in a joint effort would not only increase the students’ acquaintance with Mathematics, but could help them develop their social and communication skills. This aspect is especially important in view of the disadvantaged students who are often inhibited and need much more encouragement to take part in group activities. Also the need to use a foreign language for a specific purpose would be a good chance to overcome language barriers and cultural differences. Certainly many students will consider studying abroad in the future and such experience would help them acquire a more optimistic view of their personal skills.
